It Is Never Their Fault: Helping Children Overcome Guilt and Shame

Children often possess a natural tendency to blame themselves when bad things happen around them or to them. When a child experiences abuse, harm, or betrayal by an adult, their young minds frequently twist the situation: “If I had just been better, this wouldn’t have happened.” This heavy burden of self-blame is one of the most heartbreaking consequences of trauma, as perpetrators often manipulate kids into believing they are responsible for the harm done to them.

We must make one truth crystal clear to every child: no child is ever responsible for an adult hurting them. Adults carry 100% of the responsibility for their own choices, boundaries, and actions. A child’s innocence, trust, or confusion should never be exploited, and they must never carry the guilt of someone else’s wrongdoing. Reassuring a child that they are entirely blameless is the very first step in helping them heal.

Every child deserves protection, unconditional support, and immediate help when they are hurting. As parents, guardians, and community members, we must actively look out for them, listen to their stories without judgment, and repeatedly remind them of their innocence. By lifting the weight of guilt off their shoulders, we give them the space to feel safe, regain their confidence, and rebuild their lives without shame.
