Domestic Violence: The Silent War Behind Closed Doors

Domestic violence is one of the most painful realities hiding in plain sight. It goes beyond physical assault; it is emotional, psychological, financial, and sometimes even spiritual. It is the abuse of power, when one partner or family member uses control, fear, and manipulation to dominate another.

Too often, victims of domestic violence suffer in silence. They may stay because of love, fear, financial dependency, children, or the belief that things will change. Yet, the cycle of abuse rarely breaks without help. Each act of violence, no matter how small it may seem, chips away at a person’s dignity, confidence, and sense of worth.

In many African communities, cultural norms and silence protect abusers. People are told to “endure” or “pray about it,” turning abuse into something normalized rather than condemned. But love does not hurt. Real love protects, uplifts, and brings peace, not bruises, fear, or shame.

Ending domestic violence starts with awareness. It begins when we stop blaming victims and start holding abusers accountable. It continues when communities create safe spaces where survivors can speak, seek help, and rebuild their lives.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, speak up. Reach out to trusted friends, religious leaders, or organizations that can help. You deserve to be safe. You deserve peace. And you deserve love that heals, not harm that destroys.
