The Oyo State Police Command’s men have detained “Monday Chukwuka,” who is accused of selling his newborn granddaughter for N700,000.
Adewale Osifeso, the command’s spokesperson, described the suspect as having been apprehended on Monday in his hideout in the Ibafo area of Ogun State as a result of a reliable intelligence tip.
An actionable intelligence report about the “harvesting of a day-old baby girl” from her teenage mother, Sarah Chukwuka, in Oyo town and sale of the girl child to a criminal cartel that runs a baby factory in Abia State, was received by a team of police operators attached to the Command Monitoring, Oyo State, on July 10, 2023.
The father of the teenage girl who gave birth to the day-old baby girl confessed to the crime and described in detail how he took the baby from her mother as soon as she gave birth under the pretext of giving the baby to someone who would take good care of her, according to Osifeso, who claimed that the interview was conducted on Monday by intelligence officials.
The suspect went on to describe in detail how he transported the day-old infant to Abia State before selling her for seven hundred thousand naira (N700,000.00) to the proprietor of a baby factory there in Obehi, Okwa West.
Popoola Bunmi, a female suspect, and four other accomplices, identified as Chinwedu Peter, Chidinma Blessing, Chuckwu Christopher, and Favour Chukwu, were all apprehended in connection with the criminal activity during a coordinated raid on the baby factory as a result of the investigation’s expansion into Abia State.
Osifeso informed reporters that bundles of brand-new birth certificates and some delivery equipment had been taken from the business. He added that the suspects, at the time of their arrest, had no satisfactory explanation for the parentage of the infants who had been taken from the workplace.
The defendant (Monday) said that he decided to sell the baby because he couldn’t afford to care for both the child and his teenage daughter. He claimed that he utilised the proceeds from the sale of the child to rent a store and purchase things for it.
