A newborn baby girl who had been buried alive by her mother, who is 21 years old, has been saved by police in Lunzu, Blantyre, Malawi.
Olivia Jonas was the suspect, according to Chileka Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Jonathan Phillipo, who confirmed the occurrence on August 3, 2023.
The suspect, according to Sergeant Phillipo, was eight months pregnant when she gave birth to a baby girl alone at home on the evening of August 1, 2023, at around 18:30. She then buried the infant unnoticed in a nearby bush.
According to reports, the suspect pretended to have miscarried when her husband got home from work. As a result of the issues the suspect was having, she was sent to Mlambe Hospital for some treatment.
According to the police, when questioned by the nurses who were caring for her, Jonas claimed to have delivered a dead baby and buried her under a nearby bush.
Police from the Lunzu Police Unit hurried to the hospital as soon as they received the information from Mlambe Hospital officials, where they questioned the suspect, who admitted to burying the infant after giving delivery.
The infant was found to be still alive and in good health after the suspect led police officers and medical staff from Kadidi Health Centre to the spot where she had buried the newborn.
The suspect is currently being treated at Mlambe Hospital while she awaits her court date to confront allegations of hiding the birth of a kid.
Olivia Jonas is a native of Mjamba Village in the Blantyre District’s Traditional Authority Kapeni region.
