Female genital mutilation (FGM) Also known as female genital cutting or female circumcision, this refers to the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injuries to the female genital organ for harmful practice and a violation of human rights, including their rights to health security and dignity.

• Study has shown that over 200millon women and girls worldwide have undergone some form of female genital mutilation (FGM), many before the age of 15. Despite being internationally recognized as a human rights violation, FGM persist for various reasons.

•No matter where or how it is performed, FGM causes extreme physical and psychological harm.

HOW IS FGM A RISK FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN?

• FGM has caused more harm than good to our women and girls, FGM can lead to serious long-term complications or even death. Immediate health risks includes shock, infection, HIV transmission, urine retention and severe pain.

• In adulthood, girls subjected to FGM are more likely to suffer infertility or complications during child birth,still birth and early neonatal death.

• FGM can damage trust and create difficulties in forming intimate relationships.

• Survivors may struggle with trusting others, especially in intimate situations and may experience difficulties with emotional and physical intimacy.

• It is important to note that the psychological effects of FGM can vary amounts individuals, and not all Survivors will experience all of the consequences.

• Supportive counseling, therapy, and community intervention can play crucial role in helping Survivors cope and heal from the psychological impact of FGM.
